Introduction
Building on the work of Dafne Kaplan, this project aims to develop an automated method for combining multiple images into a single layered composition. A specialized 3D-printed lens structure allows the original images to be viewed separately by adjusting either the orientation of the lens or the position of the viewer.
The technique
The automated involves the following high level steps

Sampling
Multiple images are taken and are sampled at some pixel locations, a mask is then used to combine the images as a dot matrix pattern.

An example mask looks like

Once combined the lens plan is created, and the fabrication process may begin.
Lens Fabrication
The lens concept is based on lenticular printing, a technique in which two or more images are printed onto a single structured surface. Each image can be viewed independently by observing the structure from a different orientation or viewing angle.

The fabrication process for the lenses is based off the work of Dafne Kaplan

After the target image is composited, the fabrication process incorporates the masking information to produce a lens with a geometry tailored for proper image separation during viewing.
